Melodie Yong: "There's a good chance you've heard of sodium. But what role does it play in your health? Sodium is an essential nutrient, but Canadians are eating twice as much as they need. Pre-packaged and ready-to-eat foods are often high in sodium and eating too much over time can lead to diseases like high blood pressure.

And just to be clear, sodium is not the same as salt. Sodium is a mineral found in salt and it's added to many foods for a number of reasons. We're not talking simply about the salt you sprinkle out of a shaker.

So how much sodium do we need? Well, healthy adults only need 1500 milligrams per day and healthy children need less. So remember to always read the label and choose foods lower in sodium. Look for foods that contain less than 15 percent of the daily value for sodium.
